Casting (in) the future

A primer on CNC technology exemplified by milling molds for casting chocolate

The CNC milling machines found in most Fablabs are able to perform tasks and process materials that no other machines in the Fablab is capable of handling. Yet many CNC milling machines sits idle due to a slightly more complicated process, the risk of damaging the equipment and injury to the operator. This demo demystifies the CNC milling machines and guides the participants through the entire process from creating geometry to milling the actual pieces. We will demonstrate how to create molds for casting chocolate as an educational activity and the workshop will run on Roland-DG mini CNC milling machines.

The Demo
The demo is relevant for all classroom educators and other who wants to understand the concept and process of CNC milling.

The demo covers:

  • A brief theoretical introduction to
    a. CNC technology and its applications
    b. Controlling all kind of machines with the G-code language
    c. Do like many other: build your own CNC milling machine
  • The software needed: CAD and CAM systems
  • How to prepare geometry for milling
  • How to prepare geometry for milling • Anatomy of the CNC mill
  • How to setup the milling machine
  • The milling process
